The design of the Rolex GMT Master watch was developed at the request of the Pan American airline pilots. The pilots requested a watch be designed to give them a second time zone display, to assist them with their long haul flights. This feature was unique at the time it was produced in the latter part of the '70s.

In the early '80s, the GMT Master II was produced, giving these pilots an additional quickset hour hand that is set to local time without stopping the seconds or having to deal with the minutes and 24 hour GMT hand.

GMT is the time zone required for all aviation planning, weather reports, schedules and for use in all paperwork asked of a pilot when planning a trip. Before the use of a GPS, this GMT accuracy was depended on for astronavigation, or geographical positions using angles of the horizon, the sun and other stars. The first Marine Chronometers, or watches used for travel were manufactured for use in this type of travel marking the trip by way of stars, horizon setting and the sun on ships during the 1800s.

This accurate timepiece had to remain accurate. It had to be a dependable, easy to read timekeeper that pilots could depend on. Because of this, Rolex was the company called on to create such a tool. As usual, Rolex pulled through and manufactured a useful ticker in the Rolex GMT Master.
